South West Water has raised its dividend "by an inflation-busting" 8.3%

After BBC Panorama showed what water companies get up to! South West Water has raised its dividend "by an inflation-busting" 8.3%, despite the sewage scandal. Martin Wrigley, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate said: "This adds insult to injury, whilst shareholders get an inflation busting dividend, local people have to put up with the River Teign and Teignmouth’s beaches suffering from disgusting sewage dumping." Data released by the Environment Agency shows there were at several separate sewage discharges in our area last year. Polluting our environment with untreated human waste. Liberal Democrat councillors are calling for much tougher rules on water companies to put an end to this ongoing scandal. Teignmouth town councillor, Steve Welsh said: “It’s disgraceful that water companies continue to dump tonnes of sewage into our local rivers. It is outrageous that the Conservative Government continues to let them get away with it.”

It sinks!

Conservative MPs have just voted against a Liberal Democrat
amendment calling for a compensation scheme for swimmers and others who fall sick from illegal sewage in our rivers, lakes and seas. Once again they are letting water companies off the hook for this scandal.

Cost Of Living Support

Maximise your benefit income Research from the Department of Work and Pensions confirms that some 63 per cent of eligible people over state pension age and 52 per cent of working age people do not claim all their means-tested benefit entitlement. The result of this, revealed by research in April 2023, is that the staggering sum of almost £19 billion is left unclaimed in means-tested benefits every year. Given the impact of the current cost of living crisis, we want to make sure everyone who needs help, claim what they are entitled to, along with accessing all other support that is available. Citizens Advice can help you check what benefits you may be entitled to. Turn2Us have an online calculator for benefits and grants to check what you are entitled to. www.turn2us.org.uk

Stay Warm

With the high cost of living at the moment, it's tempting to try and ride out the cold weather to avoid spending too much on heating. But being cold can have a serious impact on your health, particularly if you’re older or have a pre-existing condition, as it increases the risks of heart attacks, strokes, and chest infections. If you can’t heat your whole home, it’s important to try to heat the rooms you spend the most time in (for example, the living room during the day and the bedroom just before going to sleep). And remember, wearing a few thinner layers is better at trapping heat than wearing one thick layer. The NHS website has lots of useful information about staying well during the winter.
